the garden at the colton arms

A canopy of roses

Overhangs the small yard,

Where an array of tables and chairs

Sit within a frame of plants and trees.

The strong scent of honeysuckle lingers in the air

Green and amber bulbs

Provide an ambient glow,

A couple of stars pierce the hazy sky

A mask of mud observes from the wall,

Like a guardsman of the garden

Brucie the dog

Provides the entertainment,

Eagerly welcoming his guests

With a sociable lick, or a whack,

From his frantically wagging tail

Despite the constant hum of pumps,

And a steady stream of planes

It’s peaceful here;

Perfect for a chilled glass of white

On a warm summer’s evening
